Kayak the Greenbrier River

Kayaking the Greenbrier River is one of those experiences that's hard to describe until you've done it. The water runs clear over a gravel bottom, the current is easy and consistent, and the valley opens up around you in a way that's hard to find anywhere else on the East Coast.

This is not the New River Gorge. There's no whitewater, no technical paddling, no experience required. The Greenbrier is a flatwater river — calm enough for beginners, scenic enough to keep anyone on the water longer than they planned.

River City offers two trip options out of Caldwell, WV — a half-day and a full-day — each on a different stretch of river. Both include a shuttle, so you're not backtracking or spotting cars. Just show up, paddle, and we'll handle the logistics.

Note: If you do not need shuttle service, use the code PICKUP while checking out, and we will take $5 off each participant's rate.

Trip Options

Who Kayaks The Greenbreir

We get all kinds of people on the water. Couples looking for a relaxed day outdoors. Families with kids who want more engagement than tubing. Experienced paddlers who want a peaceful float without managing whitewater. Older visitors who've always wanted to try kayaking but didn't want a guided clinic.

If you can sit in a kayak and use a paddle, you can do this trip. We go over the basics before you launch and the river does the rest.

What To Expect

You Will Get Wet
Wear clothes and shoes you don't mind soaking through. River shoes or old sneakers are perfect — flip flops have a way of disappearing in moving water. Leave your phone and valuables in the car or in a dry bag. We'll have you sorted before you launch.

What's Included
Your rental includes the kayak, paddle, and life vest. We cover the shuttle logistics so you don't have to worry about getting back to your car. We'll walk you through the put-in and take-out before you head out — it takes about ten minutes.

The River
The Greenbrier runs clear over gravel through the Greenbrier Valley. It's a Class I flatwater river — no rapids, no technical features. The current moves at a comfortable pace and the scenery is consistent throughout: wooded banks, open valley views, occasional wildlife. Water is comfortable for paddling from May through September.

What to Bring
Wear clothes you can get wet. Bring water, sunscreen, and snacks for a full-day trip. Close-toed shoes or river shoes work better than sandals. If you have a dry bag, bring it for your phone and car keys. If not, we recommend leaving valuables in the car.

Getting Here
We're at 114 Honaker Hollow Rd in Caldwell, WV — about 10 minutes from downtown Lewisburg. If you're coming from DC, you're about 4 hours away via I-64 W. From Roanoke, about 1.5 hours. From Charlotte, around 4.5 hours. We're easy to find and there's parking on site.

When To Go

The Greenbrier runs best from late May through September. July and August are peak season — warm water, good levels, and long days. Spring trips (late April through May) can be beautiful but water levels vary and it runs a little colder. We monitor the river and will reach out before your trip if conditions require any changes.

FAQs

Do you offer group discounts?

If you've got a group of 5 or more, give us a call. We work with groups regularly and are happy to talk through options, availability, and pricing. It's easier to sort out over the phone than online.

What are my trip options?

We offer two routes depending on how much time you have.

The half-day trip puts you on the water in Caldwell and ends in Ronceverte — a great stretch with consistent current and easy paddling. You'll have four hours on the water. When you reach the takeout, give us a call and we'll come pick you up and bring you back to your car.

The full-day trip launches from Anthony, about 14 miles upstream, and ends back in Caldwell. You'll drive your car to the takeout in Caldwell before we shuttle you to the put-in — so your car is waiting for you when you finish. You'll have eight hours on the water. Depending on conditions, the paddle may not take the full time, so plan to stop, swim, find a sandbar, and have lunch.

Do I need kayaking experience to rent on the Greenbrier River?
No experience needed. The Greenbrier is a calm, flatwater river with no rapids or technical features. We'll show you the basics before you launch — how to hold a paddle, how to steer, and what to expect on the water. Most people are comfortable within the first five minutes.

What's the difference between tubing and kayaking the Greenbrier?
Tubing is more passive — you float with the current, no paddling required. Kayaking gives you control over where you go and how fast. You can explore more of the river, get into shallower sections, and move around more freely. Both are great experiences. If you want to relax completely, tube. If you want to feel more active and engaged, kayak.

How far can I paddle in a half day?
On a half-day rental you'll typically cover 5 to 8 miles of river depending on water levels and pace. We'll set you up on a stretch that fits the time you have. Call us if you have specific distance goals and we'll find the right option.

Can I fish from a kayak on the Greenbrier River?
Yes — the Greenbrier is a popular fishing river and kayaking is a great way to access stretches you can't reach from the bank. Make sure you have a valid West Virginia fishing license before you go.
